Cooker · symptom 1
Not heating
What usually causes it
Elements, a thermostat or selector switch, or wiring on the oven, grill or hob circuit.
Before we arrive
Note which parts still work: oven, grill or which rings. That narrows the fault quickly.

The repair guide
A cooker is the oven, grill and hob together, and faults do not follow one pattern. Ignition that will not light, controls that will not respond and heat that never reaches the element cover most calls, and the approach differs between gas and electric.
Range cookers, separate gas and induction hobs and the extractor hood above them are repaired too. Any gas job is carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer, whether it is a freestanding cooker, a range cooker or a built-in gas hob.
Gas and electric cookers behave very differently. A gas oven that will not light is often a worn igniter, a dirty burner or a safety valve cutting supply. An electric oven that stays cold is usually a failed element, a faulty control or loose wiring.
The kitchen itself matters. A post-war estate, a city-centre flat and a period kitchen in Earlsdon or Styvechale each carry different wiring and layouts. The brand, model and whether it is freestanding or built-in help the engineer plan.
Cooker parts vary widely in price. A single gas component can be cheap, while a control board on an electric range is a different scale, so every part is priced and fitted only after you approve it.
Two faults recur: an ignition that clicks but never lights, and a flame that drops when you release the knob. Both usually come down to a worn spark electrode or a failing flame safety, put right once identified.
The fixed labour quote covers the diagnosis and repair. When the combined part and labour cost approaches the price of a new appliance, the engineer sets both totals side by side and helps you keep the kitchen working.
What is it doing?
One symptom can have several causes. The engineer tests before recommending a part, so you only pay for what is needed.
Cooker · symptom 1
Elements, a thermostat or selector switch, or wiring on the oven, grill or hob circuit.
Note which parts still work: oven, grill or which rings. That narrows the fault quickly.
Cooker · symptom 2
Wet or dirty igniters, a failed spark generator, a worn switch or a thermocouple fault.
Don’t keep retrying ignition. If you smell gas, turn off the supply and call the gas emergency line.
Cooker · symptom 3
Worn knobs or switches, a faulty timer or clock, wiring, or a control board on newer models.
Check the clock is set, as many cookers won’t heat without it. Note any symbols on the display.
Cooker · symptom 4
Noises, smells, error codes or a cycle that stops partway. One symptom can have several causes.

What it costs
No call-out surprises and no parts fitted on spec. This is how your cooker repair is priced.
See my labour priceSet by the appliance, its make, how it is fitted and your postcode. It covers diagnosing the fault and the repair work.
If a part is needed, the engineer explains which one and what it costs. Nothing is fitted until you agree.
If age, condition or the total cost means a new cooker makes more sense, you hear it before any part is ordered.

Your fixed labour quote appears online before booking and covers the diagnosis and repair visit. Because cooker parts vary widely, replacements are priced separately and fitted only after you approve them.
Uneven heating can come from an element, thermostat, fan or control fault. Note which oven or ring is affected and share the model when requesting a visit so the team can confirm whether the repair is suitable.
When the unit is old, parts are costly or a repair would cost close to a new cooker, replacement is usually the honest choice. The engineer compares the costs plainly before you decide.
Yes. Any gas job, from a cooker or range cooker to a gas hob, is carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If you can smell gas, turn off the supply and call the gas emergency line before booking a repair.
